1. Germany.

 

A mass rally at the Sports Palace in Berlin.

 

– Reichsminister Dr. Joseph Goebbels’ speech announcing Germany’s ‘Total War’ on all fronts.

 

The speech is reproduced partly as a live recording and partly as a narration by the announcer.

 

Applause from the audience, shouts of approval; in the hall are delegations of women, military personnel and the wounded.

 

– Albert Speer is in the hall, along with a Japanese delegation.

 

Above the stage, a slogan reads: “Total war – a swift war”.

 

The hall chants: “Führer, give the order, we follow you!” The anthem plays, close-up of the Imperial eagle.

 

2. The southern sector of the Eastern Front in the Donets region.

 

Defensive battles are taking place.

 

The Germans are sawing down telegraph poles.

 

Retreating German troops with supply trains drawn by horses and camels.

 

The civilian population moving alongside the retreating units.

 

SS battalions in the trenches.
